The Ogun State Government is preparing to introduce a new law that will impose the death penalty on individuals caught engaging in cult activities within the state and its surroundings. This announcement was made by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a meeting with the Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, held at the Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Governor Abiodun expressed deep concern about the widespread loss of lives and the disruption of peace in Sagamu and its environs. He emphasized that the government would not stand idly by while unscrupulous individuals wreak havoc in any part of the state.
The Governor extended his sympathy to the law-abiding citizens of Sagamu, the Paramount Ruler, and all those who have suffered the loss of loved ones due to the recent incidents. He assured that the government would leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice.
Abiodun highlighted that he had already engaged with the Attorney General to explore the possibility of implementing the death penalty as a deterrent measure. He believed that when people fully grasp the consequences of their actions, they may reconsider their involvement in criminal activities.
Furthermore, Governor Abiodun stated that he had called upon various security officials, including the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the State Security Service (DSS), the Commander of the Civil Defence, and the AMOTEKUN Commander, to relocate to Sagamu for enhanced security efforts.
He emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in gathering intelligence and urged them to collaborate closely with security agencies. He reiterated his commitment to demolishing any house where individuals connected to cultism or kidnapping are apprehended.
The Governor declared that individuals involved in such activities would no longer be referred to as cultists but as murderers, and they would face appropriate punishments.
Governor Abiodun emphasized his government’s dedication to the development and prosperity of the state and assured that no one would be allowed to hinder the state’s progress.
In response, Oba Ajayi expressed concern about the frequent loss of lives and property in the town and stressed that sustainable development could not occur when criminal activities continued unchecked. He requested the establishment of mobile police and military formations in the area to maintain law and order effectively.
