The Ogun State government has issued a call to factories operating within the state, urging them to ensure that their workers are equipped with appropriate safety gear, including protective goggles, to protect their eyesight. The state emphasized that its investigations have revealed a higher incidence of blindness among factory workers in the area.
Dr. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner of Health, made this announcement during a press conference held in commemoration of World Sight Day 2023, with the theme “Love your eyes at work.” Dr. Coker stated, “We are speaking to factories and employers as well; they must make sure that they provide protective goggles for their employees and ensure a safe working environment.”
She further explained, “We have realized in Ogun State, in particular, that the number of blind people that we see among factory workers is significantly higher, and the proportion is greater among those working in factories compared to the general population.”
In an effort to address this issue, the government has taken a step by distributing 250 free eyeglasses, known as “Jigi Dapo,” to artisans at the Mechanic Village in Abeokuta. This initiative aims to promote eye health and safety among those engaged in various trades.
