The Ogun State Government voiced concern yesterday over the rise of illegitimate traditional rulers in the state.
It especially voiced unhappiness with certain persons obtaining bogus appointment papers and portraying themselves as monarchs without following the processes outlined in the state’s legislation regulating the Obaship institution.
Dapo Abiodun, the state governor, voiced worry during the third quarter statutory meeting of the Ogun State Council of Obas, which was held at the Obas Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, and stated people participating in such illicit conduct do not intend well for the state and traditional institutions.
Abiodun, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, stated that those persons would not only cause chaos in the state but would also mock traditional institutions.
He vowed that the current government would no longer tolerate such unethical behavior.
Furthermore, he noted that the traditional institution remains a true framework for establishing good governance, and that any government seeking long-term growth must work with it.
Abiodun stated that his government has maintained to see traditional rulers as important partners in its pursuit of an inclusive, just, fair, equitable, transparent, responsible, and rule of law-abiding society.
“We will not fold our arms and allow a few unscrupulous people to damage the image of our state, trash our historic institutions, and put it to scorn under our watch,” he said.
He, on the other hand, assured the traditional rulers of the administration’s unwavering commitment to their welfare and well-being, citing the recent 50% increase in the monthly subvention of the four traditional councils.
Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stated in his welcoming address that the ministry had been working hard to ensure the welfare of monarchs and the filling of empty seats.
He stated that the ministry had successfully pushed through the installation of Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo and Negbuwa of Ibido, who were both present at the meeting, in accordance with applicable laws and customs.
In his presentation, Akarigbo and Remoland’s Paramount Ruler, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, thanked the governor for the 50% augmentation for the four traditional councils.
He stated that the royal fathers are concerned about security and urged the government to make enough provisions for supporting local security groups in the state.
