A technician and an unidentified person were confirmed dead when a gas explosion struck the conference hotel in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
The hotel is located at the crossroads of the Water Company capital, Ogun, and is owned by former Governor of Gbenga Daniel.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reported that three other people are believed to have been injured in the blast and are currently being treated in hospital.
Tunde Osinubi, the hotel facilities manager, confirmed the incident in a press statement that the explosion was the result of a fake gas cylinder used to repair the hotel’s revolving door.
“Routine maintenance has been carried out on the automatic turnstiles at the entrance of the hotel reception, including the use of oxyacetylene gas to weld door hinges.
“The oxacetylene gas cylinder suddenly exploded, killing equipment and other people who have not been identified.
“Gas cylinders bought on the open market may be inferior and may not withstand gas pressure,” he said.
However, Mr. Osinubi conveyed his management sympathy to the families and friends of the deceased and advised the public to be aware of the inferior gas cylinders circulating in the market.
