The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, emphasized that Nigeria’s 63-year journey as a nation has provided numerous reasons for all its citizens to acknowledge the extraordinary grace bestowed upon them by Almighty God. This divine grace has enabled the nation to surmount various challenges that have threatened its unity.
Governor Abiodun conveyed this message during an interdenominational service held at the Cathedral of St. Peter’s (Anglican) Ake, Abeokuta, in commemoration of Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary. Represented by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun, the Governor recounted Nigeria’s historical challenges, including the ethically motivated coup of January 1966, the civil war, and economic setbacks. These challenges have affected the nation’s development and have been inherited by successive administrations.
He expressed gratitude for the continuous prayers of religious leaders that have played a vital role in preserving Nigeria’s unity. Governor Abiodun stressed that the independence anniversary serves as a reminder of the significant contributions made by Ogun State’s heroes in the formation and sustenance of Nigeria, highlighting the role of the Late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and others.
Governor Abiodun affirmed that his administration’s guiding principles are rooted in the legacies of patriotism and selflessness left by these heroes. He acknowledged that his government operates with a sense of divine direction and favor, pledging to remain steadfast in following this divine path throughout his tenure, with the support and prayers of the citizens, to build a sustainable future.
In his sermon titled “The fear of God enables good governance,” Archbishop Michael Fape, Bishop of Lagos Episcopal and Remo Diocese, Anglican Communion, emphasized that the fear of the Lord is fundamental to successful governance. He called on those in positions of authority to embrace the fear of God and reject corruption, which hinders the country’s progress and development, with scriptural reference from the book of Ecclesiastes chapter 12, verses 13-14.
