The food items already had black spots, a sign of fungal growth, which made them unfit for consumption, a publication online reported.
According to the the publication, “Governor Dapo Abiodun on Saturday began sharing expired foodstuff to civil servants in Ogun State as part of his moves to solicit their support for his second term bid.”
The foodstuffs were said to be part of the COVID-19 palliatives earlier withheld from the citizenry by the government.
The report also stated that the governor, Mr Dapo Abiodun, faced criticism from civil servants after authorising the disbursement of N5,000 to state workers as part of the federal government’s relief package. This move was met with fierce opposition due to the quality of the shared food items, which were found to have expired and had fungal growth.
The shared food items consisted of sugar, salt, rice and garri which were distributed to the populace in 2020. However, the efforts of the federal government and private donors to alleviate the impact of the economic slowdown were hampered by some state governors and politicians, who stored the food items in warehouses.
The online publication said that the spokesperson for the governor, Kunle Somorin, did not respond to requests for comments on the issue.
