The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, and a former governor, now Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, have expressed sadness over the death of Mrs. Adewunmi Onanuga. She was a member of the House of Representatives for Remo Federal Constituency. Both described her death as a huge loss to Ogun State and Nigeria.
Onanuga, who was 59 years old, passed away in a UK hospital on Wednesday after being sick for over two months. She served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives for Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency.
Governor Abiodun, in a condolence message, said her death was shocking and a major loss to Ogun State and the country. He described her as a fearless leader, a loyal party member, and a great supporter of women’s progress and her community’s well-being.
He said, “I sympathise with the leadership of the House of Representatives and all members on the passing of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga. Her death was sudden and devastating. Ogun State has lost an extraordinary leader. She was courageous, loyal, and dedicated to improving lives. May God rest her soul and comfort her family.”
Senator Daniel also expressed deep sadness and described Onanuga as a trusted friend, younger sister, and an effective politician. He said she was a source of hope and inspiration for women in politics.
“She was like a younger sister to me, and her death is very painful. She had an unshakable ‘Can Do’ spirit and was full of energy and respect. She made a difference in politics and inspired women to aim higher. Remoland has lost a true icon, but we will find strength in her legacy. May her family find peace and strength to bear this loss,” he added.
