Akintola Williams, Nigeria’s first chartered accountant, dies at 104

Akintola Williams, Nigeria’s esteemed first indigenous chartered accountant, has passed away at the age of 104. His remarkable journey came to an end on Monday, after celebrating his 104th birthday on August 9.

Born in 1919, Akintola Williams was a trailblazer in Nigeria’s accounting profession, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s financial sector. In 1946, he earned a degree in commerce, with a specialization in banking and finance, from the University of London.

In a historic achievement, he became the first person from sub-Saharan Africa to attain the status of a chartered accountant in 1949 when he successfully passed the qualifying examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).

Furthermore, Akintola Williams was one of the visionary founders of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), formerly known as the Association of Accountants in Nigeria. His contributions to the field of accounting have left an enduring legacy in Nigeria and beyond.
