The head of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Abeokuta, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, received the Young Professional Excellence Award for Leadership from the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO). The award was given by FAEO President, Engr. Refilwe Buthelezi, at the 11th UNESCO–Africa Engineering Week and 9th African Engineering Conference in Kampala, Uganda, at the Speke Resort Convention Centre.
The NSE said the event, themed “Leveraging Engineering Innovations and Technology to Accelerate Africa’s Socio-Economic Transformation,” brought together engineers, innovators, and policymakers from across Africa to honor outstanding work in engineering. Engr. Idowu, the youngest NSE Abeokuta Chapter Chairman ever, was chosen after a thorough selection process among nominees from African engineering groups.
Engr. Idowu was thrilled and said the award shows the teamwork of Nigeria’s engineering community. He stated, “I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive the Young Professional Excellence Award for Leadership from the Federation of African Engineering Organisations. To be recognised among such esteemed leaders in the engineering sector is a testament to the collective effort of my colleagues, mentors, and the entire Nigerian Society of Engineers.”

He thanked NSE President, Engr. Margaret Oguntala, for her support and for creating opportunities for young engineers. He said, “I appreciate Engr. Oguntala for her guidance and support and for giving room for young engineers to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the profession.” He added, “This award is not just for me but for everyone who has supported our vision of advancing engineering in Nigeria and Africa. It is a reminder of our responsibility as young professionals to drive positive change, inspire innovation, and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of our communities.”
Under Idowu’s leadership, the NSE Abeokuta Chapter has achieved many successes, especially in guiding young professionals and promoting new engineering solutions. A graduate of the Public Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford, Engr. Idowu is also part of FAEO’s Academy Committee. He leads the NSE Programmes, Branding, Publicity, and Media Relations Committee, where he has pushed efforts to highlight engineers’ roles in national growth.
The FAEO Young Professional Excellence Award honors young leaders who inspire change, lead teams, and create impactful engineering solutions for Africa’s challenges. Engr. Idowu’s award highlights his growing influence in engineering leadership and his commitment to advancing the profession across Africa.
