A lawmaker in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rasheed Kashamu, who represents Ijebu North Constituency I, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He announced his decision on Monday during a House session. Kashamu said he left the PDP because of serious disagreements and divisions within the party at both the state and national levels.
The Speaker of the House, Oludaisi Elemide, read Kashamu’s letter, which officially informed the Assembly of his resignation from the PDP and his move to the APC. The letter explained that ongoing leadership struggles and factional fights in the PDP pushed him to leave.
Kashamu, who is the son of late Senator Buruji Kashamu, said he joined the APC to work with other progressive politicians in the state. He said his goal is to support Governor Dapo Abiodun’s ISEYA Agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He explained that after reviewing the current situation in the PDP, which is full of unresolved leadership problems, he and his supporters decided to move together to the APC. He said this would allow them to continue serving the people of Ijebu North I more effectively.
Kashamu said he has already registered as a member of the APC in his ward, Oke Sopen in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area, along with his supporters.
His wife, uncle, and other supporters were present when fellow lawmakers, led by the Speaker, officially welcomed him into the APC at the Assembly Complex in Abeokuta.
In recent times, many top politicians have left the PDP for the APC across the country. Governors and lawmakers in states like Bayelsa, Rivers, and Enugu have also defected, mostly blaming internal divisions and leadership conflicts within the PDP.
