Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shed light on the reason behind his directive for traditional rulers in Oyo State to stand and then sit during an incident that has drawn widespread criticism. Mr. Obasanjo was criticized for his actions during the inauguration of two projects in Iseyin, Oyo State, where he was the special guest of honor.
In a brief video circulating on the internet, Mr. Obasanjo expressed his displeasure at the traditional rulers who remained seated when the state governor, Seyi Makinde, entered, considering it disrespectful to both the governor and his office. Speaking in Yoruba, Mr. Obasanjo then ordered them to stand and greet Governor Makinde, which they promptly did.
Numerous individuals have criticized Mr. Obasanjo for reprimanding the traditional rulers and issuing the directive, labeling it as a violation of Yoruba culture. The Oluwo of Iwo, Abdulrosheed Akanbi, particularly criticized the former President for his actions, emphasizing that respect should be earned rather than demanded.
Oba Akanbi stated that traditional rulers should receive respect from those they encounter and that kingship is a divine institution deserving of modesty, courtesy, and respect. He demanded a formal apology from Mr. Obasanjo and stressed that Yoruba monarchs should always be treated with respect.
In response, Mr. Obasanjo explained that he took the actions he did because the traditional rulers had displayed blatant disrespect for Governor Makinde. He mentioned that when he and the governor arrived at the event venue, everyone else in attendance rose in respect, but the monarchs remained seated. When it was the governor’s turn to speak, everyone stood up as protocol dictated, except for the traditional rulers who continued to sit. Mr. Obasanjo inquired about this practice in Oyo State and was informed that the monarchs had consistently shown disrespect to their governor. This prompted him to address the issue, emphasizing that the governor, as the constitutional leader of the state, deserves respect, regardless of status or age.
Mr. Obasanjo stressed the importance of respecting authorities in line with the constitution, while also acknowledging the significance of culture and tradition. He expressed his deep respect for traditional rulers and his commitment to treating them with reverence while underscoring the importance of maintaining a balance between culture and the constitution.
