Tobi Amusan, a Nigerian athlete, became the country’s first global champion on Sunday night at the World Athletics Championships Oregon 22 after earning gold in the women’s 100-meter hurdles finals in 12.06 seconds.
Earlier on Sunday at Hayward Field, the 25-year-old broke the previous mark of 12.20 seconds set by Kendra Harrison during the semi-finals of the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
Amusan’s record of 12.06 seconds was eventually deemed invalid since the wind speed surpassed the permissible limit, although her prior world record of 12.12 seconds still stands.
Britany Anderson of Jamaica won silver, and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico got bronze. Danielle Williams of Jamaica informed reporters after the semi-finals that Amusan predicted her world record triumph before the race.
“Tobi talked it into life, only last night I was reading at Instagram and in Shanay’s profile I saw a tiny taste of what Tobi wrote (in coming world record holder) and to see it happen today I’m proud of Tobi,” Williams said.
