The National Leader and a former acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, has allegedly called on politicians to rise against impunity and tyranny being allegedly perpetuated by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
He said that the only thing necessary for evil to continue to thrive was when people who were supposed to speak against it kept quiet.
Akande said this at the inaugural lecture of the Dauda Adegbenro Foundation organised in honour of the late Chief Dauda Adegbenro, a former premier of the Western Region, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He said Adegbenro fought against impunity during his lifetime.
In his speech titled, ‘Adegbenro fought against impunity,’ Akande, who was the chairman of the occasion, noted that the Jonathan administration had exhibited and was still exhibiting traces of impunity and tyranny.
Unlike the late politician and elder statesman, Akande said that the current administration at the centre promoted impunity and imposed unwanted leaders on the people.
Tracing the history of imposition of unwanted leaders on the people by the Federal Government up to the early 1960’s, which he said led to the “Operation we ti e” crisis in the defunct Western Region, Akande said the nation needed politicians in the mould of Adegbenro to fight the impunity in governance.
He said, “We are back in a similar era of using the regime of impunity in Jonathan’s Federal Government to impose unwanted individuals as leaders in each of the states of the South-West.
“It will not be an overstatement to say, therefore, that we now require many more Dauda Adegbenros to lead Yoruba’s protest against Jonathan’s regime of impunity once again in Yorubaland.”
The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, described the late Adegbenro as a pioneer of developmental democracy.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Adeoluwa Taiwo, said, “Whatever we are enjoying today in terms of democracy, people such as the late Alhaji Adegbenro pioneered it.”
The Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was a Special Guest of Honour at the event, said the nation’s politicians needed attitudinal change in order to evolve a country that would be for every Nigerian.
In his lecture titled, “Is Nigeria Democratising? Reflecting on the past, interrogating the present, remembering an unsung democrat,’ Prof. Ademola Popoola, described Adegbenro as a “frontline politician, nationalist and a titan of political struggle.”
He bemoaned the current nature of democracy in the country, stressing that it was an extension of the colonial contraption foisted on the country by the colonial masters that perpetually kept the people at the receiving end.
He stated, “The structure foisted by the colonial state is still being sustained. There is no serious separation of powers. So much power is invested in the imperial President.”
In his own remarks, a member of the recently-concluded National Conference and the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, Wale Oshun, said government should celebrate heroes such as Adegbenro.
Highlights of the event include the unveiling of the foundation logo, presentation of the biography of the late politician and award presentation to the best political reporter.
A PUNCH Correspondent, Olusola Fabiyi, won the Political Reporter award, with his incisive political feature, titled, “NGF; A Forum of Undemocratic Governors.”
