The Senate passed a bill to create the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday in plenary.
A bill to construct the Federal College of Education in Gwoza, Borno State, was also passed by the Senate.
The legislation were passed as a result of the Committee on Health and Tertiary Institutions’ and TETFUND’s examination of two reports.
The establishment of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, according to Umar Sadiq, the senator who submitted the report on behalf of the Committee on Health, was based on the need to increase access to higher education in the field of medical sciences.
According to him, the university’s final creation will draw people to Abeokuta by offering higher educational academic and professional programmes to Nigerians interested in studying medicine and related fields.
On behalf of the Chairman, Babba Kaita Ahmad, Sandy Onuh, who presented the Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND Committee’s report, said the Federal College of Education, Gwoza, would help the North-east region improve education and infrastructure needs while also balancing access among the country’s diverse demographics.
