Senator Bukonla Saraki representing Kwara Central has been elected as President of Nigeria’s 8th Senate. He was elected unopposed by 57 out of 108 senators-elect.
Ekweremadu also polled 54 votes to defeat Sen. Ali Ndume (APC- Borno-South), who polled 20 votes for Deputy Senate position, one vote was declared invalid.
51 senators, including Sen. Ahmed Lawan (APC Yobe North), were not present when Sen. Saraki was returned as elected.
Lawan earlier on Saturday won the mock election conducted by the ruling party (APC). It is to be noted that the Sanator Saraki group boycotted the party’s mock election.
According to The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports Lawan alongside other supporters had allegedly gone for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari aimed at resolving the impasse among the contenders.
NAN reports that the day’s activity started at 10 a.m. with the reading of President Muhammadu Buhari’s proclamation by the Clerk of National Assembly (CNA), Alhaji Abubakar Maikasuwa.
Thereafter, all other senators-elect including the former President of the Senate, David Mark, took their oath of office.
