The Ogun State government has initiated a solar-powered street lights project across the state as part of its efforts to enhance the safety and security of the citizens. This decision follows recent arrests of vandals caught stealing street light cables and other components along the Sagamu Interchange-Abeokuta Expressway, including one individual apprehended for stealing a transformer.
In a conversation with journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy Matters, Mr. Oluwafemi Omisanjo, revealed that the persistent vandalism of government assets, particularly street lights on highways, compelled the administration to seek an alternative to generator-powered street lights.
As a result, the administration of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has chosen to implement a more secure and sustainable solution. A pilot scheme of solar-powered streetlights has already commenced in certain areas of Abeokuta.
Omisanjo explained that the government plans to replace the street lights along the Sagamu Interchange-Abeokuta Expressway with a solar-powered system. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis is underway to determine the widespread deployment of the newly introduced solar-powered street lights as a replacement for the existing ones throughout the state.
