Mountain-like Refuse Heaps on Ijebu Ode Roads

Starting right from the Benin-Sagamu Express Junction to the middle of the town under the bridge, Lagos motor park, there are refuse heaps everywhere on both sides of this major road in Ijebu Ode.

When Ogun Today went around the town, it was observed that no part of the town is spared of the unwholesome sight. Worse hit is Ondo-Benin road where the refuse heaps are already spilling onto the road, making vehicular movement strenuous and difficult.

Front of State General Hospital Not Spared

According to some residents of the town, the fact that some food vendors sell their food items besides some of these heaps of refuse makes it dangerous for the public.

A resident, Olugbile Oluwasegun referring to the heap of refuse at Ijagun junction Off Ondo-Benin road, said “The refuse has been here for weeks now, and food vendors are busy selling food items close to the refuse”.

“If you go to Olisa road and Omoowo road, right opposite the state Genera Hospital you will see a lot of food vendors scattered around the refuse, and people still eat from these spots even with the stench coming from those heaps of refuse. It is highly dangerous for the health of the unsuspecting public, and whoever is in charge of refuse management in Ogun State needs to come and clear the refuse now before something bad occurs to people’s health in the town.”

Also speaking to Ogun Today, an Okada rider, Abiodun Arogundade wondered how the entrance into the state’s Dental Clinic at Ogutuga street by Omoowo junction could be made a refuse dumpsite.

In his words, “We have never had it this bad in Ijebu Ode. From Ejirin Road to Ibadan Road, the stench is killing. To think that the State Government collects revenue from some of the offices, shops, and companies on these roads and its access roads and is in such shape is disheartening. When we complain at the Ijebu Ode Local Government, their officials tell us that their hands are tied that the issue is under the state government.”
