An underground bridge collapsed late Monday in Mexico City, killing at least 23 people, including children, according to government officials.
At least 70 people have been hospitalized, seven of them in severe condition, the official added.
Trains were traveling on the higher part of the city’s express transit system on the newest Line 12, also known as the Golden Line, when part of the overpass collapsed due to traffic below, said the Mexican Secretariat for Risk Management and Civil Protection.
Surveillance footage shows the moment when the overpass collapsed on the road and created a cloud of dust and debris.
The incident occurred at 22.25 WIB. Local time, according to the Minister of the Interior of Mexico City, Alfonso Suarez Del Real.
The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Scheinbaum, tweeted on the spot: “Firefighters and public safety officers are at work. Hospitals are operating. We will provide more information shortly.”
The mayor said one survivor fell into a vehicle under the rubble but had been released. No one else is trapped, he added.
Rescue efforts stalled earlier that evening due to concerns over the stability of the subway carriages still hanging over the road.
The 12 metro lines where the incident occurred were opened in 2012. The mayor will carry out an investigation into the incident, the mayor said.
“Our main task is to care for the people in the hospital, the relatives of the victims who unfortunately died in this incident,” Sheinbaum said, as reported by Reuters.
“Prosecutors will carry out all investigations and reports to find out what happened in the accident on this 12 subway line,” he added.
