The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used to describe the digitally connected world of common physical things. These devices have internet connectivity, sensors, and other hardware that allows them to communicate and control each other over the internet.
WHAT EXACTLY IS IOT?
IoT transforms formerly “dumb” gadgets into “smart” ones by allowing them to transfer data over the internet and communicate with people and other IoT-enabled devices.
A nice illustration of IoT in action is the connected “smart house.” Internet-connected thermostats, doorbells, smoke detectors, and security alarms form a linked hub in which data is shared between physical devices and users can operate the “things” in that hub remotely (e.g., changing temperature settings, opening doors, etc.) via a smartphone app or website.

- Sensors, for example, are part of the hardware that collects data about devices.
- The data collected by the sensors is then shared and combined with software via the cloud.
- After that, the software analyzes the data and sends it to users via an app or a website.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) gadgets are all around us, continually transferring data and “talking” to one another.
