American music icon Stevie Wonder has filed an eviction lawsuit against his former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, seeking to remove her from a Los Angeles property she has allegedly occupied rent-free for nearly four decades.
According to court documents cited by entertainment outlet TMZ, Efferson has lived in the property since July 1988 under an informal arrangement that was never documented in writing. The lawsuit reportedly claims that she has not paid rent throughout her stay.
The legal dispute reportedly began after Wonder’s representatives attempted to gain access to the property during the summer for an insurance inspection. According to the court filings, Efferson allegedly refused to allow the inspection, raising concerns about the property’s insurance coverage.
Wonder’s lawyers subsequently issued a notice in July terminating Efferson’s right to remain in the house. The notice reportedly directed her to vacate the property by August 27.
However, the lawsuit alleges that Efferson remained in the home after the deadline, prompting the singer to pursue legal action to regain possession of the property.
