President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
Earlier reports indicated that Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing urgent family reasons. He was appointed in June 2023 and was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, in accordance with the amended Police Act.
In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged receiving the resignation and thanked Egbetokun for his service to the country.
Tinubu praised Egbetokun’s long and distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force, highlighting his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security system during his tenure.
The statement explained that, in response to ongoing security challenges and in line with existing laws, the President approved the appointment of Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police. He expressed confidence that Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and leadership qualities would provide effective direction for the police during this period.
The statement also noted that, in accordance with the Police Act 2020, the President will soon convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following this process, his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving national security, strengthening law enforcement institutions, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully prepared to carry out its constitutional duties.
