Slash Governance Costs By 60%, Not Just Travel Expenses – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Peter Obi, has emphasized the need for a 60% reduction in Nigeria’s cost of governance. He expressed his view in response to President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to cut the cost of the federal government’s official entourage during trips. Obi acknowledged the positive step taken by Tinubu but questioned why the government had not disclosed the anticipated savings resulting from the reduction.

In a post on X, Obi commended the 60% reduction in the size of federal official entourages on travels as a step towards reducing the cost of governance. However, he pointed out that this measure, while somewhat commendable, only scratches the surface and leads to a negligible saving. Obi urged for transparency regarding the actual savings and proposed a comprehensive approach, including a 60% reduction in both federal official overseas trips and the size of delegations.

Highlighting the current economic reality, Obi stressed the importance of a 60% reduction in the total cost of governance at the federal level. He called for a revision of the recently passed federal budget to eliminate wasteful and unnecessary items, stating that such a significant cut in government expenses is essential for meaningful impact on the economy.
