The contentious passing of the singer known as Ilerioluwa Aloba, also recognized as Mohbad, has remained a prominent topic in public discussions. Among the various issues that have sparked widespread reactions, the question of who will receive the royalties from his songs has been a central point of contention.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop, legal expert Idris Balogun explained that the beneficiaries of these royalties hinged on the contractual agreements made by the late artist. Balogun stated, “The allocation of the proceeds generated by Mohbad’s music depends on the terms outlined in the contract between the artist and the record label. It is also influenced by the desires and instructions left behind by the deceased.”
Discussing the pervasive issue of artist exploitation by record labels, the attorney remarked, “Exploitation is a widespread problem that spans various industries. In the case of record labels, the most effective resolution comes through the careful execution of contracts between the artist and the label owner. It is imperative for artists to engage legal counsel to draft contracts and provide guidance.”
Addressing concerns regarding the late singer’s assets, Balogun clarified, “The protection of the wife’s interests can be ensured if she is designated as a beneficiary in the will, assuming one exists. However, in the absence of a will, she automatically becomes a beneficiary by virtue of her marriage to Mohbad (although Sunday Scoop has not independently verified their marital status). Furthermore, if the property is registered in her name or jointly in her and Mohbad’s names, it legally belongs to her, and no one else can assert a claim to it.”
