The advisory specifies certain areas with increased risk, including:
- Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and northern Adamawa states: These are cautioned against due to terrorism and kidnapping.
- Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states: The advisory warns of kidnapping in these areas.
- Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers states (except Port Harcourt): These are noted for crime, kidnapping, and armed gangs.
The advisory further mentions that violent crime, such as armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, hostage-taking, roadside banditry, and rape, is common throughout Nigeria.
Despite these warnings, the US Department of State advises American citizens who choose to travel to Nigeria to carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Nigerian visa if required. For specific states like Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and Northern Adamawa, the advisory emphasizes that the security situation is fluid and unpredictable due to terrorist activity, inter-communal violence, and kidnapping, with security operations occurring without warning.
