According to the Federal Road Safety Corps no fewer than 253 people were killed in road crashes in the past 10 months, January and October this year in Ogun State.
The state FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Adegoke Adetunji, said this at a press conference organised to mark the 2013 Africa Road Safety/World Day for the remembrance of accident victims in Abeokuta.
Compared to last year the number of deaths resulting from road crashes in the state reduced in line with the directives of the United Nations to bring it down by 50 per cent.
According to him 405 deaths were recorded from road crashes in the state last year.
The sector commander urged road users to be safety conscious, stressing that the state FRSC would embark on aggressive road traffic control and operation of mobile courts for the prosecution of offenders.
He said, “We are already in the “ember” months, there is need for us to be safety conscious so that we can have a disaster free passage to 2014.”
He said, “Road accidents are caused by certain actions we take on the highways and while the church remains prayerful, there is also the need for us to obey traffic rules and regulations. Praying and driving on used tyres at 130km per hour is like tempting God.”
According to him, it has been revealed that unless immediate and effective action is taken, road traffic injuries are to become the fifth leading cause of deaths in the world resulting into an estimated 2.4 million deaths a year.”
